Teide summit permit: what to book before the cable car

Updated October 1, 2026 · 6 min read

Walkers on rocky ground above the clouds at sunrise

A cable car ticket is not a ticket to the summit of Teide. The cable car ends at La Rambleta; the final summit route is called PNT 10, Telesforo Bravo, and has its own reservation through Tenerife ON. If the crater is the reason for your trip, organise that part first and fit the transport and cable car around it afterwards. The only offer whose description names the summit itself is the Guided Hike to the Peak of Mount Teide: seven hours from €189 per person, 4.9 stars from 81 reviews. Have it explicitly confirmed which summit access is included. Anyone who only wants to reach the upper station takes the Teide Tour with Cable Car Ticket and Transfer from €92.

This guide concerns the summit booking decision. Our cable car and transfer review covers the ordinary sightseeing excursion. Buying that excursion and hoping to add the summit on arrival is a poor way to plan something you particularly want to do.

Identify the path, not just the mountain

The summit route is PNT 10, Telesforo Bravo. The operator’s Teide status page directs visitors to Tenerife ON for access permits and authoritative trail information. Use the named route when searching there. A reservation for another Teide path is not interchangeable with the summit reservation.

Walking up from Montaña Blanca adds another access question. Tenerife ON’s ascent regulations describe reservations for routes leading towards La Rambleta, including PNT 07. Your route to the upper station and your onward summit route therefore need to be checked separately. Write down both trail names before making bookings; it prevents two different permissions becoming one vague item labelled “Teide permit”.

Book in an order that can actually work

Start with the summit availability for your party and travel dates. Then match the transport and cable car arrangements to that reservation. Read the current booking calendar rather than assuming that places always open a fixed number of months ahead. This guide deliberately gives no universal release day or guaranteed advance-booking window.

For an independent visit, I would keep the permit confirmation, cable car booking and return arrangements together on the phone, with an offline copy. Compare the names and dates immediately after booking. Discovering a mismatch at the hotel still leaves time to contact the relevant organisation; discovering it at the trail entrance may end the summit plan.

Leave space between the separate stages. Driving into the national park, finding the correct station and boarding are not the same appointment. A narrowly timed connection may look efficient on paper while making the whole morning depend on everything running exactly as expected.

What the cheaper sightseeing tour buys

The Teide Tour with Cable Car Ticket and Transfer starts at €92 per person, lasts seven hours and has 5,952 reviews at 4.3 stars – the most-reviewed Teide excursion on GetYourGuide. That is the cable car and transfer product; it is not evidence that a summit permit is included. Its appeal is coordinated transport and the ride up; assess it on those terms.

The Guided Hike to the Peak of Mount Teide starts at €189 per person and is also listed as seven hours. The short description specifies a 10 km hike and a cable car descent if the service operates. The identical total duration hides a completely different physical day. Ask what permits, transport and descent arrangements the selected option includes before treating either price as a complete budget.

For two people, the starting prices work out at €184 and €378 respectively. The difference is not a fee for the final steps to the summit. These are different products, and the hiking option needs its own detailed reading.

When a guided summit package makes sense

A guide can make sense if you want the walking experience and help coordinating the components. Look for an explicit statement that summit access is included. “Teide excursion”, “high mountain views” and “cable car included” do not establish that. Ask which route you walk, where you meet and what happens if the usual descent is unavailable.

I would also ask whether the quoted duration starts at hotel pickup or the trailhead. A hiker joining independently needs a way back to the original vehicle or accommodation. The lower cable car station and a walking route’s starting point should not silently become the same place in your plans.

Compare Teide tours by these details before sorting by price. Paying more is useful only when the additional service matches what you need.

No permit left: choose a different destination for the day

If the summit reservation is unavailable, choose a visit whose success does not depend on the crater. The three-hour Sunset and Stargazing at Teide National Park costs from €35 per person and has 4.7 stars from 3,549 reviews; the nine-hour Teide National Park, Masca, Icod & Garachico Tour from €58 combines the park with several places in the north, 4.6 stars from 2,893 reviews. Explain the change to everyone travelling before paying. Calling the upper station “almost the summit” rarely helps someone who came specifically to reach the top.

Do not build a workaround around arriving outside a familiar control time or following another group. Check current access arrangements with Tenerife ON instead. Old accounts of an unrestricted early start are not booking instructions for your holiday.

A permit is not a weather promise

Before departure, check the trail status with Tenerife ON and the cable car status with the operator. One may be available while the other is not. Keep cancellation terms for each purchase: separately booked services do not necessarily change together.

For questions about altitude and your own health, speak to a doctor; for children, a paediatrician. Read the operator’s participation conditions as well. If your group wants different levels of walking, agree on separate plans before the mountain day, including where to reunite. The Tenerife sights overview offers alternatives for anyone whose holiday does not need a summit ascent.

Our recommendation

For most people coming for the summit: the Guided Hike to the Peak of Mount Teide for €189 per person. Seven hours, 4.9 stars from 81 reviews, a 10 km hike and a cable car descent if it runs – and an operator who can tell you before you buy which summit access is included. You still check the Tenerife ON reservation yourself.

For anyone the upper station is enough for: the Teide Tour with Cable Car Ticket & Transfer for €92 per person. €184 instead of €378 for two people, seven hours, 4.3 stars from 5,952 reviews. The summit route is not bought with it, but the view from La Rambleta is.

Without a summit place: Sunset and Stargazing at Teide National Park for €35 per person, three hours, 4.7 stars from 3,549 reviews. Or the tour to Masca, Icod and Garachico for €58, if a full island day fits the trip better than a second attempt at the crater.

For anyone the summit hike isn’t for: groups with different appetites for walking, trips without a buffer day, and anyone with open health questions about altitude. Ten kilometres at this altitude is not a viewpoint stop – and a paid place is no reason to set off on a day that does not feel right.
