The actual summit is 160 m higher at 3,715 m and needs a separate national park permit – currently €15 without a guide, €10 with one, free under 14. Slots open up to 56 days ahead and sell out. The southern ports are bigger, cheaper and have more departures – if you are staying in Playa de las Américas, the drive west may cost you more than the extra hour on the boat.

The larger whale-watching catamarans take children of any age and carry child life jackets. Speedboats and quads set their own limits – buggy and quad operators here commonly require 6 to 8 years for the passenger seat, and the Masca gorge does not admit under-8s at all. Every booking page states its own minimum age; that is the number to go by, not ours.
