The lava is the coastline, not a preserved ruin
In May 1706, lava from Montaña Negra descended towards Garachico, affected part of the town and reduced the old harbour bay. The most legible result today is around El Caletón: black rock forms the edge and channels of the natural pools beside the waterfront. You are not looking at a labelled river of lava frozen above the streets. You are looking at land created where molten rock met the Atlantic.
The Puerta de Tierra makes the change easier to understand. This surviving stone gateway belonged to the old port; today it stands inland in a small park. Put that former harbour entrance together with the new volcanic shore and the scale of the rearrangement becomes visible. Nearby streets, the church of Santa Ana and the former convent around Plaza de la Libertad show that Garachico survived as a town rather than becoming an archaeological site.
For the actual route of the flow, an old mule track leads from San Juan del Reparo down towards Garachico. Tenerife’s official tourism site gives it as 4.5 kilometres, about 1 hour 30 minutes and a 500-metre descent. That is a separate walking plan, not something either coach tour promises.
Which excursion leaves enough time?
The 5-hour west-coast route is the sharper choice if Garachico is your question. Its short list is Icod, Garachico and Masca, and its description specifically mentions the volcanic coastline, historic lanes and pools. Even so, confirm whether the stop permits a walk from Puerta de Tierra to El Caletón; a pool photo alone does not explain 1706.
