Hiking boots or trainers in Tenerife: what do the trails demand?
Updated October 9, 2026 · 6 min read
For most beginners, closed trail shoes with a grippy sole are the workable middle ground; smooth leisure trainers are the wrong default. The guided hike in Anaga Rural Park costs €24 for 3 hours and is a sensible test. The guided hike to the peak of Mount Teide at €189 only suits you if you already own suitable footwear for a 10-kilometre, 7-hour mountain day.

The sole matters more than the label
Tenerife has no single walking surface. In Anaga’s laurel forest expect damp roots, leaf litter and stone; on Teide, loose volcanic material. A shoe sold as a trainer can work if it fits closed, holds the heel and has a deep tread. A heavy boot with a hard, worn sole is not automatically better. What counts is grip, support and protection, not the word on the box.
Anaga: short does not mean smooth
The Anaga tour lasts 3 hours and leads through laurel forest. The short time does not turn roots and wet rock into a pavement. Trail shoes are usually comfortable; after rain, or for more ankle protection, there are reasons to prefer broken-in boots. Flat leisure trainers leave little margin here.
Teide: this is where sturdy shoes belong
The summit trip is described as a 10-kilometre hike to Spain’s highest mountain; it has 4.9 stars from 81 reviews. The way down is by cable car, if it is running. That “if” matters: prepare for the walk, not for an effortless ride down. A secure heel, tread and protection against volcanic grit make sense here. Do not wear new boots for the first time on this tour.

The morning before the hike
Check the sole: even the most expensive mountain boot is not saved by a worn-smooth tread. Check Tenerife ON the same day for closures and disruptions.
Our recommendation
For your first hike, book the guided Anaga hike and wear broken-in, closed trail shoes with a real tread. Boots are right for rougher, wetter or high-mountain routes. For the Teide summit, leisure trainers are the wrong place to save suitcase space.
