Costa Adeje: eco catamaran with snacks – three or five hours?

Updated October 1, 2026 · 7 min read

Boat trip off the coast of Costa Adeje

For most people, it’s the short option: the Whale & Dolphin Eco-Cruise from Costa Adeje costs from €47 per person, lasts three hours and has 4.6 stars from 5,736 reviews. White Tenerife is the operator behind the long title. Three hours is a boat trip with wildlife watching, sandwiches, drinks and a swim stop – five hours make the sea the main activity of the day and continue towards Los Gigantes and Masca. If you mainly want to see whales and would rather head back after watching them, an hour-and-a-half trip for €29.90 suits you better and saves €17.10.

These two durations are precisely what makes comparison difficult: the sales page places pictures and inclusions alongside each other that do not all belong to the cheapest option. If you are booking for Los Gigantes and Masca, do not accidentally assume that the three-hour trip follows the same route.

How the short and long options differ

The White Tenerife booking page lists wildlife watching, sandwiches, beer, water and soft drinks, plus time to swim, for the three hours. The longer option adds two hours, a coastal trip reaching further towards Los Gigantes and Masca, and a wider food selection. The exact menu is not consistent across the sections describing inclusions; have it confirmed if you have particular dietary requirements.

The three-hour trip is therefore more of a boat trip with simple refreshments. Five hours make the sea the main activity of the day. Decide on the duration first and the food afterwards. Two more hours on board are no small addition if you already want to return after watching the whales.

The starting price of €47 does not establish that the longer option costs the same. Compare the same number of participants on the same date. Only then can you see what the additional coastal trip actually costs.

Puerto Colón is the departure point

The booking page gives Dock 8 in Puerto Colón as the departure point. Still, check the meeting-point description on your voucher against your chosen option. The journey from the hotel, finding your way around the harbour and checking in all take time in addition to the hours at sea.

For holidaymakers staying in Costa Adeje, that is often a more important advantage than a slightly lower price at another harbour. If you first have to travel to Los Cristianos or Los Gigantes for a cheaper trip, include both journeys in your calculation. A map of the island explains this decision better than the average star rating.

Do not schedule your return immediately before another fixed appointment. Once the boat has docked, you are not yet at the hotel or immediately sitting at a restaurant table. Especially with a larger group, it takes time for everyone to disembark and gather their belongings.

What “eco” specifically describes here

On the booking page, White Tenerife describes a catamaran with fuel-saving technology and underwater audio equipment. Its own fleet overview also shows different boats and its own trip durations. “White Tenerife” therefore does not describe one single, identical boat experience.

The audio technology is the interesting difference for curious visitors: it is intended to make underwater sounds audible on board. That does not mean animals can be heard at every location, or that there is commentary every minute. Ask at the briefing when the system will be used if that was your reason for booking.

The word “eco” does not imply an emissions-free trip or a measurable carbon footprint; the operator does not publish any such calculation. When it comes to how whales are treated, what matters anyway is what the crew does on the water. The article on whale watching without chasing explains why an advertising term and observable behaviour are two different things.

A swim stop does not mean snorkelling equipment is included

The sales page lists snorkelling equipment as an additional purchase and towels as not included. Pack your own towel. If snorkelling is your main aim, compare the actual time in the water with the offers under snorkelling and diving, instead of assuming a swimming photo promises a full snorkelling trip.

For non-swimmers, the trip may still appeal for the boat experience; ask beforehand whether you can stay on board and what participation conditions apply. If you book solely to be certain of getting into the water, you make the success of your day depend on a part of the trip that is subject to conditions at sea.

This matters with children too. A promised day of swimming is different from a possible stop during a whale-watching trip. Tell them beforehand that the main idea is being on the boat and keeping a lookout.

Comparison with shorter whale-watching trips

The Travelin’ Lady from Los Cristianos costs €29.90 for an hour and a half and, with 19,007 reviews, is the most-reviewed trip on the island. The three-hour trip considered here therefore costs €17.10 more and lasts twice as long. You are buying additional boat time and refreshments, not twice the chance of seeing animals. You can find the itinerary for the short trip in the Travelin’ Lady article.

The two-hour Dolphin & Whale Watching Cruise from Los Gigantes costs from €28. It is interesting if the cliffs are particularly important to you and you are staying in the west anyway. The Whale-Watching Catamaran with Drinks departs from Costa Adeje and costs €35 for two to three hours. You need to compare its exact facilities and inclusions on the specific offer; a similar title does not make it the same product.

All these are starting prices, not a promise for your holiday dates. The full selection is under whale and dolphin watching.

When I would not book the longer option

If this is your first boat trip on the Atlantic and you do not know how you will cope, I would not extend it to five hours just for lunch. A pharmacist or medical advice can help with questions about seasickness; a particular boat design does not replace that assessment.

Families should clarify beforehand whether there is shade, an accessible toilet and life jackets in suitable children’s sizes. A photo of the catamaran does not reliably answer any of these questions for the trip you book. The operator should also confirm any accessibility information on a booking page for your particular mobility needs.

If you want peace and quiet, also ask about music and group size. If you want an extensive trip along the coast and enjoy spending five hours at sea, you do have a clear reason to choose the longer option. Before paying, have it confirmed that Los Gigantes and Masca are actually part of the programme you are booking.

Our recommendation

For most people: the three-hour version of the Whale & Dolphin Eco-Cruise from €47 per person. It departs from Puerto Colón, right on the doorstep of the Costa Adeje hotels, packs wildlife watching, simple food and a swim stop into half a morning, and holds 4.6 stars from 5,736 reviews. The five-hour option is only worth it if the coastal run to Los Gigantes and Masca is your real reason for booking – in that case, get it confirmed in writing that both destinations are actually part of the programme.

For a small budget and little time: the Travelin’ Lady for €29.90 per person, an hour and a half, 4.7 stars from 19,007 reviews. There is no food and little time to swim. Anyone wanting a cheaper trip from the same harbour in Costa Adeje can take the Whale-Watching Catamaran with Drinks for €35.

For guests in the west of the island: the two-hour Dolphin & Whale Watching Cruise from Los Gigantes for €28, 4.7 stars from 5,427 reviews – the cliffs are the programme there, not just the backdrop. Coming from Costa Adeje, though, the trip there adds to your overall touring time.

If none of these suit you: anyone looking for the water mainly to snorkel is booking the wrong trip here – the swim stop is a stop, not a snorkelling tour, and the equipment costs extra. Anyone unsure how they cope with swell should start with an hour and a half, not five.
