The submarine in southern Tenerife: what fifty minutes underwater really buys

Updated September 16, 2026 · 6 min read

A tourist submarine at the pier in southern Tenerife

A real submarine is a rare thing to buy a ticket for, and that is most of the appeal. On Tenerife it is possible: offer 3669, “Southern Tenerife: 50-Minute Submarine Dive”, listed at €61 per person with 4.8 stars from 2,534 reviews, sailing from Amarilla Marina in the south of the island.

The booking page tells you the price and the length. It does not tell you the two things that decide whether the trip is right for you: who physically cannot board, and what the difference is between the fifty-minute dive and the seven-hour version sold in the north.

Thirty metres, forty-four seats, one hatch

The operator’s own booking site states the numbers plainly: the dive reaches 30 metres, lasts 50 minutes, and the vessel seats 44 guests. The GetYourGuide listing gives the duration as one hour, which is the appointment, not the time submerged. Both numbers are correct; they describe different things.

This is a submarine, not a boat with a glass floor and not a semi-submersible with a viewing gallery below the waterline. You descend, you sit at a porthole, and the view outside is whatever passes the hull at that depth on that day.

That last part deserves a sentence of honesty. Nobody arranges the marine life. Reviews describe fish and the seabed; the operator’s own pages describe sunken attractions placed at the dive site. What you will see is not a fixed programme, and neither the operator nor this page can promise a particular animal.

The exclusion that is easy to miss

The operator states that boarding and disembarking happen “via two short, vertical ladders inside the hatch”, that guests must be able to climb these ladders unaided, and that the trip is therefore “unfortunately not accessible to wheelchair users or guests with reduced mobility”.

That is an unusually clear statement, and it matters more than any price comparison. A vertical ladder through a hatch is not a step that someone can be helped over. If a member of your group uses a wheelchair, a walking frame, or simply cannot manage a ladder with both hands, this is the wrong booking — and you want to know that before the deposit, not at the pier. The same logic applies to anyone who is severely claustrophobic: there is no stepping outside for air halfway through.

We treat access statements as the operator’s own words, never as our assessment. Confirm the current conditions with the operator for your date, especially if a medical condition is involved. Our overview of Teide with reduced mobility follows the same rule and is worth reading if accessibility drives your planning.

Children are allowed from two, and that is the operator’s rule

The same operator page states that “ages 2 +” can take part and that “infants under 2 cannot dive”. This is one of the few underwater activities on the island with a low stated minimum age, because nobody has to swim, snorkel, or put their face in the water.

That does not automatically make it a good family outing. A two-year-old sits in a dim, enclosed cabin for fifty minutes, cannot leave, and has no control over what appears at the window. Older children who already like aquariums usually do better than toddlers who are being carried in for the novelty. If nobody in the family is enthusiastic about the machine itself, the same money buys a longer day elsewhere — compare half-day trips with children before deciding.

Minimum ages differ from activity to activity and change. Never carry this one across to a diving or snorkelling booking; the first scuba dive guide shows how different those conditions are.

€61, €57.95, €35.15: read the fare you are actually buying

Our stock lists the GetYourGuide offer at €61 per person. The operator’s own site shows an online adult fare of €57.95 and a child fare of €35.15 for the southern departure. Prices move, promotions come and go, and the calendar for your date is the only figure that counts — but the existence of a separate child fare is the point. A family of four is not four adult tickets, and multiplying the starting price gives you a number that is too high.

What a comparison page can tell you is the order of magnitude. Around €60 per adult buys fifty minutes underwater here. In the same stock, a two-hour whale-watching cruise with a swim stop starts around €28. The submarine is not overpriced for what it is; it is simply a short, expensive, unusual thing rather than a long day out.

The seven-hour version is mostly a coach

There is a second listing: offer 560973, “Puerto de la Cruz: Submarine Trip and Beach Stop in Tenerife”, €74 per person, seven hours, 4.6 stars from 191 reviews. It is the same dive with transport from the north plus free time at the beaches of Playa de las Américas.

The operator’s schedule for that north departure gives a dive at 11am, two hours free in Playa de las Américas, and a return at 3pm. So the extra €13 does not buy more time underwater. It buys the drive across the island and a beach afternoon you did not have to organise.

That is a reasonable deal for anyone staying in Puerto de la Cruz without a car, and a poor one for anyone already staying in the south, who can simply turn up at the marina. Our guide to Tenerife’s south puts the distances in context.

When I would not book it

I would skip the submarine if the group includes someone who cannot climb a ladder unaided, if a small child is unlikely to sit still in an enclosed space, or if the aim is simply to see fish — snorkelling in the marine protected area costs less and shows more, in exchange for getting wet and needing to swim.

I would book it for the machine. Descending 30 metres in a pressure hull is a genuinely unusual fifty minutes, and children who like technology often remember it long after the beach day has blurred. Just book it for what it is, and check the hatch conditions for everyone travelling with you first. The rest of the island’s underwater options are collected under snorkelling and diving.
