Snorkelling in Tenerife’s protected waters: access, routes and tour labels

Updated October 1, 2026 · 5 min read

Kayaking on the coast near Palm-Mar

In short: if you want to paddle and snorkel with a guide, book Kayaking and Snorkeling in Palm Mar Marine Reserve. If you would rather not paddle, look at the Snorkeling Boat Trip in a Turtle Habitat.

“Marine reserve” is a useful clue when comparing Tenerife snorkelling trips, but it is not a complete set of instructions for entering the water. It does not tell you which beach the guide uses, where a kayak launches, whether today’s access is open, or what conditions await on the return. Those are the questions to settle before you pay or set off independently.

The Palm Mar kayak and snorkelling offer is a good example. Its title foregrounds the protected area, while the decision you actually face is more concrete: do you want a guided paddle along this coast, and does the planned water entry suit you? A nature label cannot answer either question.

Teno-Rasca and Malpaís de Rasca are different references

The ministry’s official Teno-Rasca sheet describes a Special Area of Conservation in the western waters of Tenerife. It includes seabed habitats such as seagrass meadows, rocky reefs and submerged or partly submerged sea caves. It is a wider marine area, not one swimming cove with a single entrance gate.

Meanwhile, the Cabildo’s Malpaís de Rasca page concerns the Special Nature Reserve on land. The similar names can obscure the distinction when you read an excursion title. A walking route through the terrestrial reserve and a guided activity in the adjacent sea do not share one universal access instruction.

Neither source gives a current, beach-by-beach snorkelling permission map for every launch advertised. This guide therefore does not label an unnamed cove “allowed” or “forbidden”. For a precise entry point, check current local notices and have the operator identify the site it intends to use.

What the Palm Mar offer buys

Kayaking and Snorkeling in Palm Mar Marine Reserve costs from €45 per person for three hours and is rated 4.7 out of 5 from 124 reviews. According to the booking page, you spend around two hours on the water. The difference is a useful reminder that a booking’s duration can include preparation as well as the activity itself.

You are buying a combined kayak and snorkelling outing. The advertised protected setting is part of its appeal; it is not evidence that you will spend three hours swimming, see a particular animal or use the same route on every departure. Ask the operator to separate paddling, preparation and intended snorkelling time for your option.

Also from €45 per person, the Snorkeling Boat Trip in a Turtle Habitat is a boat-based snorkelling trip lasting two and a half hours. It changes how you reach the water activity. Our turtle snorkelling comparison explains that choice; here the important point is that two €45 tickets do not establish equal access arrangements or physical effort.

A paid tour is not a permit for an independent visit

A meeting point on your voucher tells you where to meet the business. It does not necessarily identify the place where the group enters the sea. Ask for both, particularly if you are deciding whether to walk, take a taxi or bring a car.

If you later return on your own, do not assume the guided route automatically transfers to independent visitors. Find out which access path is intended for public use and whether there are current restrictions. A visible track down to the water is not enough to establish that point.

Equally, do not infer a blanket snorkelling ban from the presence of a protected-area name. The accurate question is narrower: which activity, at which place, under which current conditions? If the information is unclear, choose an established guided departure that will confirm those details rather than inventing a rule from a map colour.

Separate snorkelling from whale encounters

The official Tenerife cetacean guidance excludes swimming with whales and dolphins. Booking snorkelling in the wider waters where those animals live does not turn it into a swim-with-dolphins activity. A whale-watching boat’s swim stop is a separate part of the programme.

For turtles and other marine life, my recommendation is to observe without touching, feeding or surrounding animals. Ask how the guide keeps the group together without crowding wildlife. Good explanations should describe what participants do, not simply repeat “eco” or “responsible”.

Practical details that matter more than the label

Describe your swimming and paddling experience honestly. Ask about returning to the kayak, where belongings stay and what happens if you prefer not to snorkel. The tour’s title does not establish that non-swimmers can take part. Operators set different age limits; check the specific booking page rather than borrowing a limit from a neighbouring offer.

Confirm the equipment included and any extra price for photographs. If you need assistance with mobility, the operator should confirm the actual entry and exit for you; a protected bay is not an accessibility statement. For questions about sun protection or seasickness, use a pharmacist or doctor.

Finally, ask what happens if conditions change the route or remove the snorkelling part. A different site may still offer a worthwhile outing, but you should know the booking terms before accepting the purchase. Compare the snorkelling and diving listings by the experience you can confirm, and keep the protected-area name as context rather than a substitute for those answers.

Our recommendation

For most people who want to paddle and snorkel with a guide, the Palm Mar tour is the right choice: kayaking and snorkelling in one outing, from €45 per person, rated 4.7 out of 5 from 124 reviews. It suits couples, friends and solo travellers who enjoy being active and feel confident in the water.

If you would rather not paddle, the boat trip is the better fit: two and a half hours, also from €45 per person, rated 4.2 out of 5 from 1,786 reviews. Neither tour is an obvious choice for non-swimmers: the tour title does not establish that they can take part, so have the operator confirm it beforehand. And neither is a swim-with-dolphins trip.
