Private boat trips in Tenerife: the group size where the price stops hurting

Updated September 16, 2026 · 6 min read

A small charter boat with a handful of guests off the coast of Tenerife

“Private boat trip” sounds like a luxury decision. Mostly it is an arithmetic one. A shared whale-watching cruise from the south costs around €28 per person; a private charter costs several hundred euros for the whole boat. Whether that is extravagant or sensible depends entirely on how many people climb aboard.

This page does the division for you, using the charters listed in our stock on 16 September 2026, and then says where the sums stop working.

The charters, and what each costs per head when full

Six listings in the stock give both a boat price and a stated capacity:

TripBoat priceUp toHoursPer head when full
Boat cruise with photos€29942€74.75
Private sailing tour, Las Galletas€38373€54.71
Private boat charter, Puerto Colón€45073€64.29
Private catamaran, San Miguel Marina€70083€87.50
Private luxury yacht, sunset€765102€76.50
Private yacht with slides, Costa Adeje€949123.5€79.08

Two things fall out of that table immediately. The cheapest boat is not the cheapest seat — the €299 cruise works out dearer per person than the €383 sailing trip, because it carries three fewer people. And none of these ever undercuts the cheapest shared trips, which start at €28 for two hours and around €47 for a three-hour eco-cruise with snacks.

Where the line actually falls

Compare like with like. The three-hour shared cruises in the stock sit roughly between €47 and €65 per person, with drinks or snacks included.

Against that band, the €383 sailing charter breaks even at about seven people, the €450 Puerto Colón charter at roughly seven to eight, and the €949 yacht at somewhere around twelve to fifteen. Below those numbers you are paying a premium; above them, you are paying about what the shared boat costs — and getting the boat to yourselves.

For two people, a private trip is a special occasion and nothing else: the €450 charter works out at €225 each, against €28 for a seat on a shared cruise. For a family of four, it is still roughly double or triple the shared fare. It is at six to eight people — two families, a group of friends, a small celebration — that the decision changes character. That is the honest answer to “from how many people does it pay off”, and it is higher than most people expect.

Read the price label, not just the price

Our stock carries GetYourGuide’s own price labels, and they are not uniform. Most private listings are marked “per group up to” a number. One three-hour private yacht cruise from Las Galletas is listed at €425 per person, which is a completely different product from a €425 boat. Reading that one as a boat price would be a €1,700 mistake for a family of four.

Two more listings carry a capacity of one in the feed while their own titles say otherwise — a private catamaran advertised for a maximum of 22 people, and a Puerto Colón sailboat charter that states a group of 11 maximum. The feed’s figure there is plainly a data quirk, not an offer to take one passenger out on a 22-person catamaran. Check the capacity on the booking page before you plan around it, and do not treat our table as the contract.

What the boat price does and does not include

Each listing states its own inclusions: tapas and unlimited drinks on one, lunch and drinks on another, an aperitif and a swim stop on a third, and pick-up on at least one. None of that is a category standard. Whether fuel, harbour charges, snorkelling gear, or a photographer are covered is written on the individual booking page, and that is the page that governs.

Ask about it in the same message in which you ask about capacity. A charter that looks €70 cheaper can arrive with the drinks unbundled.

What you get that a shared boat cannot give you

Time control is the honest advantage. On a shared cruise the swim stop lasts as long as the schedule allows; on a charter it lasts as long as your group wants, within the booked hours. There is no queue for the ladder, no waiting for forty strangers to board, and no compromise about music or shade.

It also solves specific problems. A group with a nervous swimmer, a baby who naps at unpredictable times, or someone who needs to sit somewhere particular has options on a private boat that do not exist on a shared one. Our boat trips with children guide covers the age conditions, which are set per operator and not by boat type.

What it does not buy is a better chance of seeing whales. The animals are where they are, the same rules of approach apply to every vessel in the Teno-Rasca waters, and paying more for the deck does not change what surfaces beside it.

When I would not book a charter

I would not book one for two or three people expecting value. I would not book one on the assumption that a private boat may go closer to the animals, because it may not. And I would not book the cheapest boat in the table without checking capacity — the per-head figure, not the sticker, is the number that decides.

I would book one for a group of seven or more who want the same three hours a shared cruise offers, with the timings under their own control. At that size the premium has mostly disappeared, and what remains is a boat that leaves when you are all actually there. For everything else, the whale and dolphin category and our Costa Adeje eco-catamaran comparison cover the shared alternatives.
