For most first-time visitors the teide, Masca, Icod and Garachico tour is simpler: €58, nine hours, guided, four places without any route planning of your own. If you want to be picked up, choose the small group for €66.50 or the guided hike for €89.

What stays with you when you go alone
Driving yourself, you set the route, the parking and the length of your stay alone. That pays off when the village is the reason for the trip and you want to stay a long time. As part of a loop through Teide National Park, Icod and Garachico, you would be driver and planner for four widely scattered places.

Five hours with Masca, the Los Gigantes cliffs, a swim in volcanic pools and a picnic, as a small group with hotel pick-up in Los Cristianos, Las Américas and Puerto de la Cruz. You pay €8.50 more than for the circuit and give up Teide, but you get the pick-up.

This tour does not go through the village but above it: through the laurel forest with views of the Masca Valley and Teide, with hotel pick-up and drop-off in the south of Tenerife and a picnic. With 4.9 stars from 458 reviews it is the best-rated of the three. If you stay in the north, the description names no pick-up for you.

Drive yourself if you want as much time as possible in the village. Everyone else books the teide, Masca, Icod and Garachico tour and lets others plan route and order; if pick-up matters more to you than Teide, take the small group.
