Tenerife with Teenagers: Who Can Drive What Alone, and What It Costs for Four

Updated October 1, 2026 · 8 min read

Tenerife: 1-Hour or 40 Min Jet Ski Safari

With teenagers, three birthdays matter on Tenerife: 14, 16 and 18. The short answer for the programme: the Jet Ski Safari from Puerto Colón is what teenagers can genuinely steer themselves here – alone from 16, younger as a parent’s passenger. It costs from €32.49 per person for 40 minutes or an hour and has 4.5 stars from 3,105 reviews. Anyone budgeting for four people does better with Kayak & Snorkel: three hours for €27.36, 4.7 stars from 11,905 reviews. And the evening that surprises even 15-year-olds is Sunset and Stargazing at Teide National Park for €35.

This article assumes children between 12 and 17 who can swim and don’t want a programme built for eight-year-olds. For younger siblings, see the overview for families.

Who Can Drive What Alone

From 14, one of the surf courses in Las Américas takes participants at all, and from 14 a teenager from outside the Canaries pays the fee for Teide’s summit path. At 16, they can ride a jet ski alone with the operators in Puerto Colón, according to their booking terms. And for quad bikes and buggies, the operators require the driver to hold a driving licence, which puts teenagers in the passenger seat.

Jet ski. Four operators in Puerto Colón allow solo riding from age 16, two of them explicitly only with parental consent. Anyone taking a passenger must be 18 with all four; passengers can come along from age 6, 7 or 8 depending on the operator. Two of them explicitly don’t require a driving licence. So a 14-year-old sits at the back, with a parent steering. The Jet Ski Safari, with the most reviews of any offer here (3,105), comes as a 40-minute or one-hour ride from €32.49. From Puerto Colón, an hour costs €48.60, and along the cliffs of Los Gigantes, €70. Other operators set other limits – these are stated on the respective booking page.

Quad bike and buggy. Here it’s not the teenagers’ age that decides, but the parents’ driving licence. One quad operator starting near Guía de Isora requires the driver to be at least 18 with a valid, original category B driving licence; passengers must be 7 years old and 1.20m tall. A buggy operator likewise requires a valid driving licence. The 43 buggy and quad tours start at €56.95, the price of a quad trip to Teide on a double quad; the median is €140. Whether a price is per person or per vehicle is stated on the booking page.

Paragliding. On a tandem flight the pilot steers, so weight and wind are the more important limits. One tandem operator in Adeje takes children from age 6, states a usual range of around 30 to 100kg, and requires parental consent for everyone under 18. A flight from Costa Adeje costs €110, from the Ifonche launch site – at 1,100 metres according to the operator – with landing in La Caleta €129.99, and from Puerto de la Cruz or from Teide National Park €140.

Diving. Two dive centres in the south take children for a trial dive from age 8 and age 10 respectively; the first states a maximum depth of 10 metres, 3 metres for eight- and nine-year-olds. Other centres set other limits. Whether a medical certificate is required is up to the dive centre; whether a teenager should dive is a question for a doctor. The beginner dive at a spot with turtle sightings costs €70 and has 886 reviews; the snorkelling and diving category covers 44 offers from €22.95.

Surfing. Almost all surf courses take place at Playa de las Américas. One small-group course takes, according to its description, “children from age 6” (€49, two hours), while a premium group course with a maximum of five people takes participants only “from age 14” (€40). So not every course is open to a twelve-year-old.

What Bores Teenagers

Three hours on a boat when nothing turns up after the first half hour. Whales are wild animals, and whether they show themselves isn’t up to the captain. A 15-year-old counts the minutes faster than their parents.

The Travelin’ Lady whale safari from Los Cristianos, by contrast, lasts an hour and a half, includes a swim stop, and with 19,007 reviews is the island’s most-reviewed tour on GetYourGuide; it costs €29.90. What happens on board is covered in the article on the Travelin’ Lady. The 37 offers under whale and dolphin watching start at €25.20, with a median of €50.

The second pattern is the early bus. The Teide National Park, Masca, Icod and Garachico Tour costs €58 and lasts nine hours. For adults that’s a packed island day; for teenagers, mainly a day at the bus window. Two half-days with one destination each work better.

What Works

Siam Park. The water park in Costa Adeje costs €44 and has 18,556 reviews at 4.5 stars. Minimum heights apply for the big slides, set by the park per attraction; for a small twelve-year-old it’s worth checking before buying. More in the article on Siam Park tickets.

Loro Parque in Puerto de la Cruz, also €44 and €78 combined with Siam Park, is better discussed with teenagers beforehand. It’s a zoo with animal shows, and that’s a conversation you’d rather have at home with a 15-year-old than at the entrance.

Kayaking and snorkelling. Three hours for €27.36, 4.7 stars from 11,905 reviews: paddling along the volcanic coast, snorkelling in a secluded bay, videos included. A similar tour from Los Cristianos costs €22.95. Meeting point and age limits are stated on the booking page, more in the article Kayak and Snorkel Tenerife.

Stars at Teide. Sunset above the clouds, then telescopes in the national park: three hours for €35 (4.7 stars, 3,549 reviews) or €40 (4.2 stars, 4,504 reviews). Anyone who thinks teenagers can only be lured by adrenaline should still plan this evening in. It’s cold up there at night; a warm jacket is essential, even in summer. The 67 Mount Teide tours start at €20.

A Hike With a Real Destination

Barranco de Masca. The gorge ends at the sea, and the way back is by boat. That’s exactly what makes it more appealing to teenagers than any loop trail. Access is regulated: you book a personalised ticket from €40.66 through the official Cabildo de Tenerife website. Participation isn’t allowed under age 8, and under 18 a legal guardian or a person authorised by them must come along. The descent takes around four hours over about five kilometres; sturdy, closed hiking boots are mandatory, a helmet is rented on site, and you should bring at least 1.5 litres of water per person. A guided tour with boat crossing, permit and transfers costs €145 for six hours.

Teide’s summit. The path from the cable car’s mountain station to the summit is, according to the national park, strictly regulated, and the reservation runs through the Tenerife ON platform. It can be booked up to 56 days in advance. Since 19 January 2026, access between 9am and 5pm has cost €15 for visitors from outside the Canaries, and is free for children under 14; so a 15-year-old pays too. The guided summit hike covers 10km, lasts seven hours, costs €189, and comes down by cable car “if it’s running”. Whether a teenager should climb to this altitude is a question for a doctor.

What Four People Pay

Calculated with the prices shown in the comparison; operators set their own child and youth rates, which can lower the total.

A quiet week’s programme: Siam Park €176, whale safari €119.60, kayaking and snorkelling €109.44, a starry evening at Teide €140. Together that’s €545.04, and if the two teenagers also do the surf course at €40 each, €625.04.

The expensive items look different. A tandem flight for all four, at €110 per person, costs €440; the guided summit hike, €756; the combined ticket for both parks, €312. At this point it’s usually not the teenagers’ programme that blows the budget, but the wish for everyone to join in everything.

When the Programme Splits

Often that’s the better solution. The surf course at Playa de las Américas lasts two hours, and the parents sit on the promenade in the meantime. With paragliding, the teenager flies while the rest of the family waits at the landing site – in the case of the flight from Ifonche, in La Caleta.

With the jet ski, the split runs by age: the 16- and 17-year-olds ride alone, younger ones as a parent’s passenger. At Masca it doesn’t work that way, since minors need a legal guardian or authorised companion.

When It’s Not a Good Idea

If a 13-year-old is looking forward to their own jet ski: in Puerto Colón, they ride at the back with all four operators. Saying so beforehand avoids the argument at the jetty.

If the budget is tight but the buggy still has to happen: at a median of €140, you pay a lot for the teenager to sit next to you. Two hours of surf course or, from 16, one jet ski hour put more into their own hands for less money.

And if Teide’s summit is planned as a spontaneous item: without a reservation, there’s no going up. Which other questions matter before booking a boat is covered under Boat Trip with Kids: Minimum Age; what else can be booked on land is gathered under things to do in Tenerife.

Our recommendation

For most people: the Jet Ski Safari from €32.49 per person. It’s the offer where a teenager from 16 genuinely sits at the controls, lasts 40 minutes or an hour, and has 4.5 stars from 3,105 reviews. For younger ones, the passenger seat stays with a parent – worth settling beforehand.

For a tight budget and four people: Kayak & Snorkel for €27.36 per person, three hours, 4.7 stars from 11,905 reviews. For four that’s €109.44 – less than a single tandem flight, and everyone’s occupied at the same time.

For the evening that convinces even sceptics: Sunset and Stargazing at Teide National Park for €35 per person. Three hours, 4.7 stars from 3,549 reviews. Bring a warm jacket, even in summer.

For anyone this isn’t for: anyone travelling with a 12- or 13-year-old who’s determined to drive themselves won’t find a solution – neither jet ski nor quad nor buggy hands over the controls before 16 or 18 respectively. Then two hours of surf course is the more honest answer. And anyone booking the nine-hour island circuit because it includes a lot is mainly buying teenagers time at the bus window.
