Kitesurfing or windsurfing in El Médano: when to go and what to book
Updated October 8, 2026 · 4 min read
The short answer: book the Tenerife Private Kitesurfing Lesson with Instructor if you want individual tuition and already know that kitesurfing is your choice. It costs €150 for one person, lasts 2 hours and has 5 stars from 3 reviews. For windsurfing, compare local schools directly: GetYourGuide currently offers no like-for-like lesson here, so pretending that one booking settles both sports would be misleading.

Kite or sail?
Windsurfing keeps the sail attached to the board. That makes the equipment relationship easier to understand at the start, although balancing and turning still take practice. A kite generates power farther from you and adds lines, launching and landing procedures and a larger working area. A private first session is therefore useful for learning control and beach procedure before chasing distance.
El Médano is known for wind, but a windy destination does not mean every hour suits every beginner. Operators decide on the day whether conditions fit the lesson and the participant. Ask what happens if the wind is too weak or too strong, and do not invent your own threshold from a forecast app.
When to choose another day
Skip the lesson if your real aim is a relaxed swim: wind and moving equipment make the sports area a poor substitute for a sheltered beach. A two-hour slot is also an introduction, not a promise that you will ride independently. The booking page says the instructor is certified and that you receive a digital record of your level; it does not promise a particular level by the end.
El Médano becomes busier when reliable wind attracts experienced riders, particularly in the warmer season. Crowd level and usable wind still vary by day. Book early in your stay so a weather-driven change does not consume your last afternoon.
Our recommendation
For a first, individual kite session, choose the Tenerife Private Kitesurfing Lesson with Instructor. If you specifically want windsurfing, contact an El Médano school and compare lesson length, group size and equipment before paying.
